Jeff Williams Bio

Jeffrey S. Williams is an advertising instructor at the University of South Carolina and works as a consulting creative director for Brand Spells, an advertising and content creation agency in Fort Mill, SC.  He received his M.F.A. in photography and Electronic Interdisciplinary Media (video) from the University of Florida in 2004 and his B.F.A. from the University of Memphis.  During his graduate school years, he and his wife opened a boutique production company, that created commercial photography, video, and design work for individuals and advertising industry clients all while continuing to work on his fine art career.  After over 12 successful years, the business was sold in late 2013 to enter academia full time and become focused on filmmaking and fine art.

Work in progress:

“Madhouse” Working title. Set to film in spring 2017

“Ben and Pauli Cook a Rat” Working title. Set to film in summer 2017

“Well Done” (working title) focuses on documentary style filmmaking about a group of scientists navigating the murky waters to research the environmental and social implications of fracking(unconventional drilling).  This work is in collaboration with Sabrina Habib Williams.  Jeffrey has spent many days out in the oil and gas fields of Texas to capture footage of the field work.  He is also working inside this research organization as an affiliate which gives him unparalleled access to the issues scientists face when trying to research such a controversial topic.

In addition, he is also working as a cinematographer on  “Family Reintegration” which is a feature length documentary about veterans returning to civilian life after combat overseas, set to premier in late 2017.  This work is in collaboration with director Dr. Raymond Hinojosa, sociology professor at the University of Central Florida.

Recent work completed:

“Touching in Texas” is a story written by Dustin M. Hoffman and Directed by Chris O’Neill. Adapted from a short story, this film has been screened at the Underexposed Film Festival, LA Cine Festival, and The Southern Exposure Film Festival.  Jeffrey was the director of photography and producer.

Jeffrey’s photography projects “American Dream” in collaboration with Sabrina Habib are miniature dioramas set out to challenge meaning in visual communications used in storytelling.  The exploration comes from the usage of the camera and how it has changed over the very short period of time in existence. Many twentieth century photographers spent their career capturing “the decisive moment” what if the camera was removed from these moments and the image had to be reconstructed from memory?  Discoveries in Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation and the hyperreality that we seem to exist in currently helped push the level of exaggeration and dream-like quality.  The camera of choice used in this work was a Betterlight 4×5 scanning back with a Sinar X and Schnieder glass.  His work has been exhibited and shown in galleries internationally and nationally.

Software proficiencies include: After Effects, Audition, Bridge, Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Stop Motion Pro, HTML5, CSS3.
